Rabab Meets Rock

Qais Essar – The Ghost You Love Most (Qaissar, 2018)

The Ghost You Love Most presents the music of Qais Essar, a talented Afghan multi-instrumentalist currently residing in Phoenix (USA). The Ghost You Love Most is Qais’ fourth album and brings together three great traditions, Afghan music, western classical and rock.

Qais main instrument is the ancient rabab lute. He orchestrates his musical compositions beautifully, incorporating cello, guitar, bass veena, harp, Indian slide guitar and a few additional instruments like the evocative kaval and organ.

The combination of rabab with drums and chamber music instruments has a feel that reminds me of some of the finest progressive rock bands that incorporated folk and classical music.

The lineup on the album includes Qais Essar on rabab, guitar and tanpura; Cenk Erodgan on fretless guitar, Thierry Amar on bass; Zach Tenorio – Miller on organ; Ray Belli on drums; Kamaljeet Alhuwalia on santoor; Sheela Bringi on harp; Rhitom Sarkar on Indian slide guitar; Justin Gray on bass veena; Eric Zang on kaval; Brian Wilson on cello; Christopher Votek on cello; Jason Wiedman on drums; and Dallas Huber on bass.

The Ghost You Love Most features cover artwork by Safwat Saleem. It is masterfully-orchestrated album by Qais Essar that takes the rabab into exciting new directions.

Spellbinding Music Inspired by the Moon and the East

Ross Daly and Kelly Thoma – Lunar (Labyrinth, 2017)

Lunar is a superb 2-CD album by influential musician, composer and Crete-based world traveler Ross Daly and one of his most distinguished students, Cretan artist Kelly Thoma.

Most of the music on Lunar consists of mesmerizing and circular original compositions by Daly, who is deeply inspired by the musics of the Eastern Mediterranean, primarily Greece and Turkey, and Central and South Asia.

Ross Daly is a multi-instrumentalists who plays a wide range of musical instruments from Greece, Turkey, Afghanistan and other parts of the globe. One of his specialties is the lyra and Afghan rabab. On Lunar, Daly is joined by Kelly Thoma on soprano lyra and percussionists Saam Schlamminger, Marija Katsouna and Zohar Fresco on bendir frame drums. The fascinating sound of the bendir is a perfect fit for Daly’s music, creating an overall spellbinding effect.

Labyrinth Musical Workshop in Crete Announces Summer Seminar Program 2016

Labyrinth Musical Workshop, one of the most respected series of seminars and master classes in Europe, has announced its Summer Seminar Program 2016. The workshops target musicians of all levels who wish to study the modal musical traditions of the world.

Labyrinth is located in Crete (Greece) in the picturesque mountain village Houdetsi 20 kms from the capital city of Heraklion.

In addition to helping students learn the necessary technical and theoretical skills of each musical idiom, the seminars and master-classes encourage students to come closer to the spirit of the tradition they are studying, and to eventually enter into this world where musical language is just one of many other intertwining elements.

Throughout the seminars, teachers and students become part of one big “parea” (company in Greek). Aside from the time spend in the classes, teachers and students play music together, eat together, talk about matters of common interest, share stories etc.

International Highlands Music from Peru’s Festival de Alturas

1er Festival Internacional de Alturas – Lima, Perú, noviembre 2014 (Asociación Arte de Alturas, 2015)

This album features artists from across the globe who participated in the first Festival Internacional de Alturas (Highland Festival) held in Lima, Peru. The festival celebrates the rich and varied musical traditions of the peoples who live in the high mountainous areas of the world.

The selection includes artists from South American countries that share the Andes mountain range: Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia and Argentina. Europe is represented by artists from countries that border the Alps: Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy and Germany. The great Himalayas range is represented by an Indian act from Kashmir.

The diversity of sounds is quite striking. The album opens with Swiss band Alphorn who use the traditional alphorn (a really long trumpet-like instrument) in a contemporary fashion.

Track 2 features Peruvian vocalist Consuelo Jerí accompanied by Ricardo Villanueva, delivering music derived from the Ayacucho region.

Probably the most familiar from the Andes are the pan flute and charango ensembles. Los Jaukas (Perú) perform traditional Andean music using string instruments and flute.

Andrea Capezzuoli e Compagnia deliver an accordion-driven call and response northern Italian folk song combined with a jazz.

Argentina’s Mariana Carrizo performs a passionate Argentine folk song accompanied by a drum.

Freddy Torrealba is a charango virtuoso from Chile who demonstrates his admirable technique. He’s one of the finest charango players in the world.

Peruvians Jean Pierre Magnet (saxophone) and Luciano Quispe (harp) perform jazz-infused Andean music with an unusual instrumentation consisting of saxophone and harp.

Kofelgschroa represents the music of the Bavarian Alps of Germany. The quartet plays brass and accordion music inspired by traditional music.

Rabab Instrumental Group is a quintet from Srinagar (India). They perform traditional music using the rabab lute and clay drums.

Colombian act Dueto Vivir Cantando includes Fernando Salazar and Lucho Vergara. They play a melodic Colombian Andean song using vocals and guitars.

Andrés “Chimango” Lares is an Andean fiddler who accompanies traditional folk dancers. He performs a brief traditional tune.

French musician Laurence Bourdin specializes in the electroacoustic hurdy gurdy. His style crosses numerous boundaries, from medieval music to Occitan folk and jazz fusion.

Marcelo Peña is a quena (traditional Andean flute) maestro. He’s joined by charango virtuoso Wilson Molina. They represent the new vision of Andean traditions of Bolivia.

Peruvian act Conjunto Pancho Gómez Negrón are preservationists of the Chumbivilcas high plains traditional music.

The album closes with traditional yodeling music by Austrian folk band Alma.
