Echoes Of Japan by Minyo Crusaders Tops the Transglobal World Music Chart

Echoes of Japan” by Japanese ensemble Minyo Crusaders is the number 1 album in the June edition of the Transglobal World Music Chart. Minyo Crusaders, led by guitarist Katsumi Tanaka, has recreated historic Japanese folk songs (min’yō) by adding Latin American, African, Caribbean and Asian rhythms. “Echoes of Japan” (Mais Um) is their debut album.

Amina by Refugees for Refugees Tops the Transglobal World Music Chart in May 2019

Amina, the second album by the Belgium-based world music collective Refugees for Refugees is the number one album in the May 2019 Transglobal World Music Chart.

The Refugees for Refugees ensemble includes acclaimed musicians from Syria, Tibet, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan and Belgium. After the debut album ’Amerli’ in 2016, 10 of the musicians that took part in the recordings formed a band under the artistic direction of Tristan Driessens.

Vardan Hovanissian and Emre Gültek – Karin

The album Karin (Muziekpublique) by duduk player Vardan Hovanissian (Armenia) and saz virtuoso Emre Gültek (Belgium, with roots in Turkey) is the number one recording in January 2019 on the Transglobal World Music Chart.

“Karin” is the ancient Armenian name for the town of Erzurum, situated in what is now Turkey. It is the birthplace of Vardan Hovanissian’s grandfather, who was one of 200 survivors following the deportation of around 40,000 residents during the Armenian genocide. The recording is a tribute to the cosmopolitan period in Karin, which was a crossroads for the different cultures that existed along the Silk Road.

Flight by Afro Celt Sound System Tops the December 2018 Transglobal World Music Chart

Flight by Afro Celt Sound System is the number one album in December 2018 at the Transglobal World Music Chart.

The current Afro Celt Sound System lineup includes founder Simon Emmerson along with vocalist, kora and balafon player N’faly Kouyaté and Dhol Foundation drummer Johnny Kalsi.

Flight highlights migration, with a particular focus on refugees. Three other large collectives are featured on the album: the Amani Choir whose music director Emmanuela Yogolelo arrived to England from the Democratic Republic of Congo and has a refugee background; Stone Flowers, the band supported by Music Action International, a charity that helps transform lives affected by war, torture and armed conflict through music and song; and the Johannesburg-based African Gospel Singers.

A Tiempo Real – A New Take on Spanish Tradition (ARC Music), the double album by Spanish folk music band Vigüela is the number one album of the the October 2018 Transglobal World Music Chart.

Vigüela has captured the essence of Spanish folk music as performed in village homes, festivities and celebrations in the province of Castilla-La Mancha and beyond. The group performs their materials on folk instruments and kitchen utensils such as guitarros manchegos (small guitars from Castile-La Mancha), castanets, frame drums, the zambomba friction drum, folk guitars, triangles, the bowed 1-stringed rabal, lutes, jars, bottles, mortar and frying pans.

Wande (The Beloved), the album by Malian musician Samba Toure tops the Transglobal World Music Chart in September 2018.

We had a totally different album in mind,” Touré said, “a return to something more traditional, almost acoustic. I think this album is less dark than the previous ones. It has some sad and serious songs, but it sounds more peaceful. All the first takes have been kept, I didn’t re-record any guitar lines, the first takes are the one you can hear on the album. There are less overdubs than in previous albums, we didn’t try to polish or make anything perfect, it gives a more natural feeling.”
