Havana, Cuba – The group Proyecto Joven Son, formed by Santiago de Cuba duet “Postrova”, septet “Luna Negra” and quintet “5 pa’ ti” will officially perform at Cubadisco 2001, to be held on May 16-20 in Havana. “Son” music’s importance and international projection was once more highlighted by this project sponsored by the EMI and Bis Music (Artex) record labels, which pay tribute to recent new groups and “trova”singers.
According to EMI Odeon Cuban Music Department director Seju Monzón Navarro, they are interested to know how young people perform traditional music. “We see that they are doing a fusion of “son” music with “guaracha” and other rhythms“, said Monzón Navarro.
Madrid, Spain – Cuban singer Caridad Hierrezuelo began a tour of Spain the second week of May to launch her recent record entitled “Como yo quería“. The singer is known for her “guarachas” and “sones”, that identify her as the “guarachera de Oriente”.
During her over 40-year career, the Cuban singer has sang with important singers such as Benny More, Eliades Ochoa, Los Van Van and La Vieja Trova Santiaguera, among others. In June, Hierrezuelo will tour the rest of Europe.
Santiago De Cuba, Cuba – Although Eliades Ochoa recently announced his retirement as a trova singer, the Cuban musician acknowledged this week that he will continue singing his music throughout the world, after reconsidering that first decision. “It is difficult to give up the public who listens to my music, I appreciated that during my tour of South America“, said Ochoa, a Grammy award winner and one of the members of Buena Vista Social Club. The singer of “Píntate los labios María” will give a great concert at Cuba’s National Theater on May 17, as part of the activities of the Cubadisco 2001 trade show.
London, England – British label electric Melt will release May 14 an album titled Sanscapes – Visions of the Bushmen that draws its inspiration from the ancient culture of the San Bushmen of Southern Africa. The CD features raw recordings from the Pops Mohamed Presents the Bushmen of the Kalahari that have been remixed by some of the world’s best producers and remixers: Raj Gupta, Simon Emerson, Kirk Degiorgio, Smadj, and many others.
This project is to raise awareness and financial support for the San Bushmen of Southern Africa. A non-profit venture, all proceeds from the album sales and gigs will be donated to WIMSA (Working Groups of Indigenous Minorities of Southern Africa). Havana, Cuba – Cuban “trova” music will be the focus at the 5th Cubadisco 2001 International Fair, to be held on May 16-20 in Havana, with an explosion of “sones”, “rumbas” and songs at the widest expression of Cuban music. The most important event for Cuban record companies, a unique opportunity for those who are interested in Cuban music throughout the world, will be also dedicated to the Brazilian music. Some of the highlights of the trade show will be the performances by Brazilian legends Cuarteto Jobim Morelembaum, Rosa Passos, Iván Lins, Guinga and Zé Paulo; the presentation of Compay Segundo’s biography, and a benefit CD recorded by Spanish and Argentine artists to support Cuban music schools.
Santa Bárbara, USA – There will five days of dance, music, films, lectures, and workshops in this Californian city. The festival will feature Spanisah flamenco star Eva la Yerbabuena with the Compañía de Flamenco with Paco Jarana, Arcángel, Enrique Soto, and Coxita García.
(Prensa Latina) Havana, Cuba- Cuban musical group Baobab, performers of the so-called Afro music, will perform at London’s Afro Music Festival at the end of this month. The group will launch its first CD entitled “Baobab,” recorded by the British Domino Music label at Havana’s EGREM studio. Baobab, whose name is taken from an African tree, performed recently in Portugal and at the Black Roots (Raíces Negras) Festival in the U.S. city of Atlanta, where the band received a recognition diploma. According to the group’s director José Ramón Rodríguez, the group is looking for a more contemporary sound, improvising with elements of jazz, reggae or rap.

Cleveland, USA – Steel pan virtuoso Andy Narell has recorded a double live album, Live in South Africa, for the Heads Up International label.
Narell performed live in with veterans of the south African music scene: guitarist Louis Mhlanga, keyboardist Andile Yenana, Bassist Denny Lalouette, drummer Ron Watson and percussionist Basi Mahlasela.
Salvador, Brazil – The Instituto Cultural Casa Via Magia, in partnership with EFWMF – European Forum of Worldwide Music Festivals, is delighted to announce that it has opened the selection process for artists and groups that wish to be part of its artistic showcases, which will be held at Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, from December 4-9, 2001.
All artists/groups interested need to send any material for evaluation to Instituto Cultural Casa Via Magia. The deadlines are May 20, 2001 for the first selection or until 15 June 2001 for a second and final evaluation. Any material regarding the artist/group are interesting, but it will be indispensable CDs for musical performances, video for plays or dance, and photos for any kind of exhibition.
