The album cover for Contrasts by Marcos Valle features a close-up of the artist's face, partially obscured by concentric ripple-like lines in warm orange and cool blue tones. Wearing sunglasses and a white shirt, Valle appears on the left side, while the album title is positioned to the right in geometric fonts.

Marcos Valle’s Contrasts Returns Modern Bossa Nova in Style

Marcos Valle – Contrasts (Far Out Recordings, 2025 reissue)

Originally released in 2003, Contrasts marked a pivotal moment in Marcos Valle’s late-career resurgence. It combined early 2000s studio polish with his signature Brazilian songwriting. It is important to note that the album became one of his most sought-after titles. Furthermore, it is full of irresistible, refreshing, charming songs, and perfect for the summer. Outstanding tracks like “Parabéns,” sampled by Childish Gambino, covered by Tom Misch, and remixed by Misa Negra, and the laid-back “Agua de Coco” helped cement its cult status.

Produced by Roc Hunter and executive produced by Far Out Recordings founder Joe Davis, the album features contributions from Robertinho Silva (percussion), Azymuth’s Alex Malheiros (bass), and Valle’s wife Patricia Alvi (vocals). Together, they put together a splendid mix of samba, baião, bossa pop, broken beat, house, and trip-hop.

Now, more than two decades later, Contrasts returns in a remastered edition. Set for release on July 11, 2025, via Far Out Recordings, the reissue includes a double LP and CD version. Notably, it features the original mixes of “Valeu” and “My Nightingale” on vinyl for the first time. Remastering was handled by Stuart Hawkes at Metropolis Studios.

Musicians: Marcos Valle on vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, Fender Rhodes, organ, melodica, keyboards; Alex Malheiros on bass; Renato Franco on flutes, saxophones; Trick on trumpet, flügelhorn, trombone; Patricia Alvi on vocals; Robertinho Silva on percussion, drums; Leandro Sapucaí and Layse Sapucaí on percussion; and Roc Hunter, programming.
