Aynur, one of the great voices of the eastern Mediterranean, will be touring the United States and Canada in September 2018. Her ensemble includes Salman Gambarov on piano and Cemil Qoçgîrî on tenbur. Clarinetist Kinan Azmeh will be a special guest at New York concert.
Aynur is one of the leading musicians in Turkey. Her music is based on traditional Kurdish folk music, which she combines with Western music. Her lyrics often describe the life and struggles of Kurdish people, specially women. Her recordings include Hawniyaz, Hevra (Together), Rewend and Keçe Kurdan.
Aynur has collaborated with Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, Kayhan Kalhor, Javier Limón, Kinan Azmeh, and appeared in the documentary film “The Music of Strangers” about Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble.
The Chano Domínguez Quintent will be touring the West coast of the United. Acclaimed flamenco jazz pianist Chano Dominguez will be joined by bassist and composer Alexis Cuadrado, and drummer/percussionist Henry Cole, along with two renowned Spanish artists, singer Blas Cordoba an National Flamenco Contest winning dancer Daniel Navarro.
The quintet will revisit the music of Miles Davis through the prism of flamenco with selections from Domínguez’s Flamenco Sketches album that pays homage to Miles Davis through interpretations of his classic 1959 album Kind of Blue.
In addition to the West Coast dates, Chano will be performing with his trio at New York City’s High Line Ballroom as part of Blue Note Festival on June 26h. This lineup consists of Dominguez, Alexis Cuadrado and Henry Cole; and at the Montreal International Jazz Festival on June 28th, with Cuadrado, Cole, and New York City-based flamenco duo Ismael Fernandez (vocals) and Sonia Olla (dance).
Lastly, Domínguez will be releasing Chano & Colina, his latest recording for the Sunnyside label, on June 1st, 2018. The album captures Chano and his old friend and collaborator, Spanish bass virtuoso Javier Colina, live at the Sala de Camara del Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid in January 2017. It’s an intimate and beautiful record that invites the audience to listen in on the duo’s extraordinary, decades-long musical rapport.

Zimbabwean sensation Mokoomba will be back in the United States this summer for a summer too. The band made its SXSW debut in March 2018 and was inducted into the Afropop Worldwide Hall of Fame on May 3rd.
This five week tour starts in June and will go across the continent, making stops from the Midwest to Los Angeles and the California desert to Washington DC, and New England.

Genre-defying band Jenny and the Mexicats has announced its return to the United States with a new tour that will take them to 19 cities starting on February 28. The first stop will be in Washington, D.C. and the dates will intertwine with their European tour where the quartet’s growth and popularity has intensified in the last year, forcing them to extend their tours and their stay.
Jenny and the Mexicats combines jazz, rockabilly, folk, flamenco, reggae, “veracruzano” music, country and cumbia.
Jenny and the Mexicats was formed by an English woman, two Mexicans and a Spaniard. Originally based in Madrid (Spain), the group later moved to Mexico in 2012.
The band released the bilingual album ‘Jenny And The Mexicats‘ (2011). In 2014 they released their second album ‘Ome.’ Their latest recording is Mar Abierto (Mexicat Records, 2017).
Zimbabwean band Mokoomba, an increasingly popular world music act, will be touring the United States in February and March 2018 in support of its 2017 album, Luyando.
The tour will include Mokoomba’s debut at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas and a week-long residency at the Zimbabwe Cultural Center of Detroit.

American world music showcase producers globalFEST have announced a tour featuring some of the finest young Latin music artists based in the United States. The tour, called globalFEST: The New Golden Age of Latin Music is part of globalFest On The Road’s productions. The artists featured include Las Cafeteras from East Los Angeles (California), Orkesta Mendoza from Tucson (Arizona) and Flor de Toloache from Brooklyn (New York).
The tour is divided into two sections: February 1 – March 3 concerts will feature a double bill with Las Cafeteras and Orkesta Mendoza; and March 7 – March 15 shows will include a double bill with Las Cafeteras and Mariachi Flor de Toloache.
The six-member ensemble Las Cafeteras began as a group of students at Eastside Cafe, a community space in East Los Angeles, where they learned to play son jarocho, a traditional music style from Veracruz rooted in Spanish, African and indigenous traditions. Veracruz is a state in the Gulf of Mexico. All of the band’s members are children of immigrants.
Las Cafeteras features traditional Mexican folk instruments including the jarana, an 8-string guitar; the quijada, a donkey jawbone (which serves as a percussive scraper) and a tarima, a wooden platform for dancing. While rooted in son jarocho, Las Cafeteras incorporate other music elements. It’s a combination of styles and sources that serves to deliver socially conscious lyrics, in both English and Spanish.
“We’re organizers. We’re movement kids,” said band member David Flores in a recent interview. “But we don’t say we’re political. We say we’re storytellers. It’s just not the mainstream story.”
They have released two recordings. Their song “La Bamba Rebelde”, a politically-charged remake of “La Bamba” (perhaps the most famous son jarocho) from their CD It’s Time (2012) became a theme song for the telenovela Bajo El Mismo Cielo on the Telemundo network. Las Cafeteras’ second album, Tastes Like LA, featuring the song “If I Was President”, was released in April 2016.
Las Cafeteras includes Daniel French on vocals, jarana; Enrique Chi on guitar; Denise Carlos on vocals, jarana, zapateado; José Cano on drums, cajón; Hector Flores on vocals, jarana, zapateado; Gloria Estrada on bass. From 2/11 through 2/18 concerts, Enrique Chi will be replaced by Chrisol Lomeli (vocals) and Xocoyotzin Moraza (requinto). For the 3/15 concert, Enrique Chi will be replaced by Jorge Mijangos (requinto, vocals).
Orkesta Mendoza, originally founded by singer and guitarist Sergio Mendoza in 2009 to play a 20-minute tribute set honoring Cuban mambo king, Dámaso Perez Prado, is an elegant sextet that plays a high-energy combination of mambo, cumbia, psychedelia and rock. The Orkesta´s music, arranged to suggest a big band with a touch of lo-fi electronics, speaks of a borderless world in which US culture and Hispanic traditions come together.
“I think it has to do with being near the border,” explained Mendoza, who also toured and recorded with Calexico, in an interview with the online magazine Rhythm Passport. “I grew up in Nogales, Sonora. Living in Mexico exposed me to cumbia and many regional styles of Mexico, such as mariachi and norteño. When I was 7, I moved to Nogales, Arizona. I started getting into American music and that is where the mixture of cultures begins.”
“From about 12 to 24 I completely forgot about Latin music. I studied a bit of many styles of music during that time. A little jazz, salsa, ska and a lot of classic rock and roll. I took a little bit from all the styles I had played and that’s how I started Orkesta Mendoza. Today we just want to rock more. Of course, it is Latin-based, but we like turning up our amps and consider ourselves a rock band.”
¡Vamos a Guarachar! (Let’s Party!) is the band’s most recent release and an invitation to dance with a mix of styles that goes from surf rock to mambo and pop rock.

Flor de Toloache
Winners of a 2017 Latin GRAMMY for their album Las Caras Lindas (The Pretty Faces), the all-female Flor de Toloache will partner with Las Cafeteras for the final segment of the tour, beginning March 7th in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The band was founded in 2008 by Mexican-Dominican violinist, vocalist, composer and arranger Mireya Ramos, who grew up in Puerto Rico listening to her father’s mariachi records, and Cuban-American vocalist and vihuela-player Shae Fiol. It started as a trio featuring harp, violin and vihuela (a small guitar-like instrument) before becoming a full ensemble. The members hail from diverse cultural backgrounds including Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Australia, Colombia, Germany, Italy and the United States.
In 2015, they were nominated for a Latin GRAMMY for their self-titled debut, which paid their respects to traditional mariachi music while also adding their own R&B influences. The name Flor de Toloache, (toloache flower) alludes to the white flower of the Datura, a toxic plant known as a love potion in Mexican folk legend.
Flor de Toloache includes Mireya Ramos on violin, vocals; Shae Fiol on vihuela, vocals; Julie Acosta on trumpet, vocals; TBC on guitarrón, vocals.
Acclaimed Israeli singer-songwriter and UNICEF goodwill ambassador David Broza will be touring the United States in December 2017. Broza, who sings in Hebrew, Spanish, English, and Arabic, will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of his best-known song, “Yihye Tov” (Things Will Be Better). The popular composition was written in 1977 during the Arab-Israeli peace talks between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin, and has become an anthem of the Israeli peace movement.
Joining Broza on stage is a group of outstanding musicians: Berklee School of Music graduate and qanun virtuoso Ali Paris (Palestine); Jonathan Levy (Israel) on guitars; Shaul Eshet (Israel) on piano and keyboards; Berklee graduate Tali Rubinstein on recorders (USA); Yuval Lion (Israel) on drums; and on Uri Kleinman (Israel) on bass.
The tour follows the release of Broza’s album titled The Set List, a collection of studio and live recordings celebrating David Broza’s career as one of Israel’s most important cultural icons. “Yihye Tov” is represented on The Set List with a live version recorded in 2007 at Broza’s annual concert held at the symbolic fortress of Masada, and features special guests Shawn Colvin and Jackson Browne.
Broza garnered widespread acclaim for his 2013 album East Jerusalem West Jerusalem, produced by Steve Earle, and recorded in its entirety in the Palestinian Sabreen Studio in East Jerusalem. The work, featuring a band of both Israeli and Palestinian musicians, resulted in a wonderful, intimate documentary of the same name.
The Set List also includes “The Long Road”, featuring Irish singer Maura O’Connell. The song, written by Cliff Eberhardt, was recorded in 1998, but was shelved along with the ensuing album after Broza sustained serious injuries following a car crash.

Estonian Neo-Folk Trio Trad.Attack! is currently touring the United States. Trad.Attack! includes Sandra Vabarna, Jalmar Vabarna and Tõnu Tubli, musicians dedicated to carrying the folk traditions of Estonia forward into the 21st century.
Trad.Attack! draw inspiration from archive recordings of the great Estonian folk singers and instrumentalists who created and performed music for work, leisure and festivities in the old times. The musicians build a modern sound and pulsating rhythmic structures around old recordings, using acoustic 12-string guitar, drums, an array of whistles, bagpipes and mouth harps.
Since their 2014 debut Trad.Attack! has released two internationally acclaimed albums, won 14 music prizes, and played in over thirty countries from Chile to Malaysia — including such festivals as WOMEX, WOMAD, Eurosonic, Transmusicales, and Mundial Montreal.

Pakistani 10-piece Sachal Ensemble will be touring the United States for the first time during October and November 2017. The group, formed by philanthropist and music producer Izzat Majeed, mixes typical Western instruments like piano, bass and drums with traditional South Asian ones, such as tabla, dholak and sarangi.
The Sachal Ensemble’s repertoire on this 2017 tour will combine traditional Sufi music, ragas and treasured Pakistani cinema songs (like “Ranjha Ranjha,” from the movie Raavan) with distinctively South Asian versions of Western classics, including The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” R.E.M.’s “Everybody Hurts,” Michel Legrand’s “The Windmills of Your Mind,” and, their unique recreation of Dave Brubeck’s hit “Take Five” that became a YouTube sensation with over 1 million views.
The international phenomenon created by the “Take Five” video led to an invitation in 2013 for the Sachal Ensemble to collaborate with trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. The musicians’ remarkable journey from Lahore to Lincoln Center was captured in Song of Lahore, a documentary film by Award-winning director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Andy Schocken.
An album released in the United States soon followed, Song of Lahore (Universal Music Classics, 2016), featuring the Sachal Ensemble collaborating with Wynton Marsalis, Meryl Streep, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Nels Cline of Wilco, Madeleine Peyroux and Sean Lennon.
A recent Pakistan-only release, titled Jazz and All That, includes Sachal Ensemble ‘s versions of Brubeck’s “Blue Rondo A La Turk,” and songs such as Stevie Wonder’s “You’ve Got It Bad Girl”, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Wave” and Henry Mancini’s “The Pink Panther.”
