World Music Institute (WMI) is celebrating its 37th year in New York City with some of the finest artists in the current world music scene.
WMI’s Winter-Spring 2022 season includes performances from Korean avant-garde psychedelic string ensemble Black String; Palestinian composer and ud/violin maestro Simon Shaheen; an all-star Celtic music double bill celebration with Irish trad legends Dervish and Eileen Ivers Band; a Pacific-and-Indian Ocean-spanning multimedia performance from Small Island Big Song.
Also included, trailblazing Gambian kora master and vocalist Sona Jobarteh; Ukrainian quartet DakhaBrakha; Middle Eastern world electronica duo Niyaz; Niger’s Tuareg desert blues quartet Les Filles de Illighadad; Tibetan singer-songwriter and tradition-keeper Techung and his Tibetan Ensemble; the world premiere of composer and Persian santoor virtuoso Ehsan Matoori’s “Voices and Bridges” project, and the reunion of Mali’s afropop duo Amadou & Mariam with acclaimed gospel ensemble Blind Boys of Alabama.
In addition, WMI will continue to present its free, monthly, “WMI Plus at Home” virtual series.
