Several artists received special honors at the 65th Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas in La Unión, Murcia, Spain, with awards recognizing accompaniment, guitar, individual flamenco styles and regional talent.
Singer Manu Soto received the €1,000 Special Jury Prize for best accompanying artist in recognition of his work throughout the festival. Meanwhile, Granada musician Pablo Campos Trigueros, known as Pablo Campos, received the Mariano Conde Prize, which included a flamenco guitar made by the luthier brand Mariano Conde. The Special Prize for Young Singers was not awarded this year.
Additional singing awards went to Sebastián Cruz Márquez, known as Sebastián Cruz, who received €2,000 for his soleá and €3,000 for his cartagenera. Isabel María Rico Nieto, known as Isabel Rico, earned €3,000 for her levantica, while Bernardo Javier Miranda Luna, known as Bernardo Miranda, received €3,000 for his tarantas.
In addition, La Unión guitarist Pablo Barrionuevo received the new €1,000 Festivales Región de Murcia Prize. Barrionuevo also won the festival’s €6,000 Bordón Minero, the top competitive award for flamenco guitar.
The jury comprised dancer Eduardo Guerrero, winner of the 2013 Desplante; flamenco critic and scholar José Manuel Gamboa; flamenco promoter Kyoko Shikaze; instrumentalist and composer Juan Parrilla; trovero and researcher Paco Paredes; singer and flamenco scholar Juan Pinilla, winner of the 2007 Lámpara Minera; and attorney Juan José Carrión, who served as secretary.
