Colombian DJ Rata Piano has released an album of champeta music from Colombia’s Caribbean coast titled El Rey de los Guarapos (king of the guarapos) on Palenque Records. Champeta is a Colombian genre that brings together Caribbean, African and modern music elements.
Dj Rata Piano is a star in the undergound Champeta scene, in Barranquilla. He has been working with many Champeta Sound Systems, making remixes of champeta and African tunes. For his famous sets he plays the CASIO SK 5 Piano Sampler, wich is one of the most used samplers in Champeta Sound Systems.
Many Colombian DJs started doing remixes of African tunes; these remixes were called “guarapos“, and have become a subgenre of champeta music.
