Alba Carmona Lovingly Celebrates Traditional Female Singers on Cantora

Alba Carmona – Cantora (2023)

Alba Carmona‘s second album, Cantora (2023), skillfully pays homage to traditional songs, drawing from the richness and distinctiveness of oral tradition music. The title means female singer in Spanish. People engage in singing and dancing for various reasons, whether for joy, as part of ritualistic practices, as expressions of belief, ideological convictions, bitterness, or declarations of love. At the heart of this genre lies vocal music. Alba, a gifted, innovative and passionate singer, compiled nine songs from diverse origins, beautifully and emotively performed through a contemporary lens.

Cantora encompasses influences from various regions and traditions of Spain, alongside nods to Latin American and Andean melodies. Alba’s flamenco and Andalusian background, along with Jesús Guerrero’s contribution as a guitarist and co-producer, forms a cohesive bridge between the varied “cantes de ida y vuelta” (roundtrip or coming and going songs) highlighted in the album. These types of songs reflect the strong and fraternal bond between the music of Spain and Hispanic America.

Following her tenure with Las Migas and collaborations with admired artists like Miguel Poveda, Perico Sambeat, Chano Domínguez, and Carlos Saura, Alba Carmona continues to forge a robust career, gracing prestigious stages across Europe and beyond. Notably, the debut presentation of “Cantora” is slated for the Lincoln Center in New York during the autumn of 2024.
