DakhaBrakha (meaning “give and take”) is a quartet from Kyiv, Ukraine, that was formed in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art by the avant-garde Theater Director Vladyslav Troitskyi.
Initially, DakhaBrakha experimented with Ukrainian folk music. Later, the four artists added rhythms from surrounding countries and around the planet into their music. The quartet called their style “ethno-chaos”; a fiery trans-national mix based on Ukrainian traditions and intertwined with the band’s theatrical roots.
DakhaBrakha has performed worldwide at major music festivals.
The lineup incudes Marko Halanevych on vocals, goblet drum, tabla, didgeridoo, harmonica, accordion, cajón, jaw harp; Olena Tsybulska on vocals, percussion; Iryna Kovalenko on vocals, jembe, flute, buhay, piano, ukulele, zgaleyka, accordion; and Nina Garenetska on vocals, cello.
