DuOud

Artist Profiles: DuOud, the Oud Innovators

DuOud is a unique and innovative musical group based in Paris, France, that combines the traditional sounds of the oud with electronic and contemporary elements. The group is composed of two talented musicians and producers, Mehdi Haddab and Smadj, who are also accomplished oud players. They bring their individual skills and experiences to the table to create a truly unique and captivating sound.

One of the key aspects of DuOud’s music is their use of electronic sounds and production techniques to create a fresh and modern sound. They take the traditional sounds of the oud and mix them with electronic beats and production techniques to create a sound that is both familiar and new. This approach gives their music a unique and innovative edge, and it sets them apart from other groups that are working in this genre.

DuOud’s music is not only entertaining, but also carries a message of cultural fusion and diversity. The group wants to bring together different cultures and musical styles, and they believe that music has the power to bridge the gap between different communities. They have performed in many countries around the world, including France, Europe, and the Middle East, and their music has been well-received by audiences of all backgrounds.

DuOud’s debut album was “Wild Serenade”. It featured the two North African oud players along with a violinist, cellist, and percussionist. The album’s 11 tracks demonstrated the mastery of Smadj and Mehdi Haddab and showcased the versatility of the oud. The band mixed acoustic and modern electronic elements, incorporating the world music sounds of North and Central Africa, India, and Spain.

DuoOud toured globally for 2 years, playing music from their successful “Wild Serenade.”

The duo’s new album “Sakat” was inspired by their visit to Yemen through a cultural exchange program. They met renowned musicians Abdulatif Yagoub and Ahmed Taher and recorded traditional music with them.

In Paris, they aimed to modernize the traditional music while preserving its essence, highlighting unique oud techniques and updating harmonies and arrangements. Jazz musician Eric Truffaz added his trumpet to “Illhdah al Aakerh,” completing the project.
