Rhiannon Giddens has shared a new interpretation of Elizabeth Cotten’s “Freight Train.” It is a stripped-down tribute to the influential North Carolina folk musician. The track appears on Giddens’ upcoming album, Hope Is the Thing with Feathers, due September 18 via Nonesuch Records.
The recording brings together Giddens’ lead vocal with acoustic guitar with longtime collaborator Dirk Powell.
“Freight Train” became one of Cotten’s best-known compositions and remains closely associated with her distinctive approach to folk guitar.
The track also reflects the broader approach of Hope Is the Thing with Feathers. Recorded live at The Cypress House in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, the album centers on musicians performing together in the same space. Few overdubs were used, while sounds from the sessions—including conversation and foot stomps—remain part of the recordings.
