The Finnish-African group Maajo appeared onto the dance scene in 2016 characterized by electro-tropical rhythms grounded in Afro-Balearic sounds.
Since their first release in 2016, Maajo built a dedicated international following. Hailing from Finland,
Maajo has evolved from a sample-based electronic music project to a full-sized world music fusion band, including African vocalists and musicians.
Maajo has released two full-length albums and three EPs on Queen Nanny Records, in addition to recordings on German label Permanent Vacation. Additionally, Maajo has received the remix treatment from artists such as Luke Vibert and Call Super, and toured festivals and clubs around the world.
Maajo made their debut on Brooklyn’s Wonderwheel Recordings in 2022 with “Better Days,” an old school, upbeat disco song with Balearic, reggae and funk influences. The single features two new band members, Mauritian drummer-vocalist Gilbert K and Zambian singer Waina. “Better Days” pays homage to 1970s African and Caribbean Disco. In addition to English, the lyrics are sung in the vocalists’ native Creole and Nyanja.
