Artist Profiles: Cordel Do Fogo Encantado

Cordel Do Fogo Encantado, from Arcoverde City, located in the back country of the state of Pernambuco, Northeast of Brazil, a region continually devastated by drought and placed between the poorest in the country.

Formed by five young musicians, the band has a basic percussion sound and incorporates to their work elements that result from the fusion of Black (African), Indian and European Cultures. The group is composed by Lirinha (voice, timbrel and fifer), Clayton Barros (voice and guitar), Nego Henrique (percussion/voice), Emerson Calado (percussion/ voice) and Rafa Almeida (percussion/voice).

Cordel Do Fogo Encantado explores the musicality of Moxotó-Ipanema (a region of Arcoverde City), having as its main sources the Toré (a kind of dance) from the Xucuru Tribe, samba de côco, an original percussive beat created by the black people in the marginalized suburbs of Arcoverdereisado (a popular song celebrating the Epiphany), of the farmers from the Caraíbas village, the fife bands and the Blessed Singers.

The band also borrows from the oral traditional singers, “aboiadores” (men that sing to cattle to guide them) and popular poets like Chico Pedrosa, Manoel Filó, Manoel Xudu, Inácio da Catingueira and Zé da Luz. Lirinha, the singer and leader of the group, has been involved in poetry and meetings of the traditional folk singers, and has become a true heir to the oral rustic poetry.
