It is remarkable to see her dance with such energy and passion on stage. This is Angélique Kidjo, and this extraordinary woman is 66 years old. Here she is performing the South African classic “Pata Pata,” originally made famous by Miriam Makeba. It was one of many outstanding moments during her 90-minute concert, which took place on Sunday, August 23, at SummerStage in Central Park, a venue that is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its founding.
Angélique, a former UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, is one of the most influential figures in what is commonly known as world music. Born in Benin, in West Africa, and a longtime resident of France, Kidjo danced, sang, and completely won over the hearts of New Yorkers.
