Cara — Our Ship Is Ready (Artes Records, 2026)
Cara’s Our Ship Is Ready, their ninth album, features a fine mix of original compositions along with new arrangements of emotive and evocative Irish and Scottish traditional songs and tunes. The album addresses themes such as emigration, love, loss, and climate change. According to band member Gudrun Walther, “Singing the songs and playing the music of past generations can help us to engage with the realities of modern life in a different, and sometimes deeper, way.”
Musically, Cara effortlessly navigates the spaces between Celtic traditional music from Ireland and Scotland, nu-folk, Americana and acoustic pop. The ensemble features beautiful solo and blended harmony vocals, superb arrangements deeply rooted in tradition, and timeless, outstanding instrumental performances on fiddle, guitars, pipes, flutes, and whistles. The album also includes two Irish guests: percussionist Cormac Byrne, from County Waterford, and concertina player Susan Coleman, from County Donegal.
Musicians: Gudrun Walther: vocals, fiddle, diatonic accordion; Kim Edgar: vocals, piano; Simon Pfisterer: uilleann pipes, flute, whistles; Jürgen Treyz: acoustic and electric guitar, dobro, lapsteel guitar, electric bass, mandola, Rhodes, harmonium, synthesizer, backing vocals.
Guest musicians: Cormac Byrne: bodhran, percussion, drums; Henrik Mumm: double bass, electric bass; Susan Coleman: concertina; and Claus Steinort: flute.
