The Larry Stephenson Band Revisits Bluegrass Favorite “Lizzie Lou”

The Larry Stephenson Band has released a new rendition of “Lizzie Lou” (Turnberry Records). The Osborne Brothers first recorded “Lizzie Lou,” which was written by Boudleaux and Felice Bryant. On the new version, the band uses traditional bluegrass instrumentation with close harmonies and Larry Stephenson’s distinctive tenor vocals.

Stephenson formed his band in 1989 after establishing a career as a bluegrass vocalist and musician. Over more than four decades, he has remained closely associated with traditional bluegrass.

The song follows the band’s chart-topping debut for the label, “You Made It Right.”

“‘You Made It Right’ was an incredible way to begin our relationship with Turnberry Records,” said Stephenson. “The response from bluegrass radio exceeded our expectations, and we wanted the next release to continue celebrating the music that has inspired us throughout our careers. ‘Lizzie Lou’ is another great song from The Osborne Brothers catalog and Sonny Osborne actually suggested years ago that I record it, but I never did until now. Sorry, Sonny! I think he’d approve and especially Derek Vaden’s wonderful banjo playing. The Osborne Brothers have always been heroes of mine, so it’s an honor to revisit one of their great recordings.”

Musicians: Larry Stephenson on lead vocals, mandolin; Derek Vaden on harmony vocals, banjo; Jimmy Haynes on guitar; Matt Wright on harmony vocals, bass.

Recorded and mixed by Ben Surratt at Ben’s Place Studio – Nashville, Tennessee. Mastered by Alex McCollough at True East Mastering – Nashville, Tennessee.
