Luana Bayô, a Leading Brazilian Black Music Singer-Songwriter

Luana Bayô is a singer, songwriter, and educator from São Paulo. Owner of a powerful and striking deep voice, her work is strongly marked by the presence of black music in the diaspora. She does a lot of work in Brazilian popular culture. Notably, she presents rhythms such as vissungos (Minas Gerais mining songs created by black workers), sambas, jongos (musical genre developed by black slaves at coffee plantations) and other songs that were and are part of her trajectory.

Inspired by the symbols of Oxum and Yemanjá, singer and songwriter Luana Bayô presented her work Abebé in 2023. It has as its central theme the “Mirror” and its mysteries, a dive into the feminine, the ancestral gourd-womb. With songs talking about the different waters that inhabit us and the various facets of being a woman, especially being a black woman.

Luana Bayô was chosen to participate in the Malungo Festival 2023, an event featuring in-person and video presentations that celebrate the diversity of Brazilian Black Culture.
