Lord Mouse and the Kalypso Katz
Go Calypsonian (Piranha Musik, 2013)
From Berlin’s considerable melting pot comes another tasty concoction, a great calypso album by an international group of calypso heads. Lord Mouse and the Kalypso Katz is a very large ensemble with a charismatic vocalist, a vibrant brass section and lively backup singers. It’s a fun album loaded with good humor and just right for the summer season.
Although the foundation of the band’s music is calypso from Trinidad, you can also hear elements from the Spanish-speaking areas of the Caribbean and other neighboring islands.
“The Calypsonian vibe gets to everyone and anyone,” exclaims American-born Lord Mouse, the instigator behind this Berlin sensation. The ensemble stays away from the latest electronic trends. “Our old-school sound is partly due to a great sound engineer. Also, crappy instruments help!” Lord Mouse laughs.
“Originally, my idea was to put together a smaller ensemble, playing traditional calypso in the 1930s style. But we have a lot of talent in Berlin, and people just kept on coming. Before I knew it, we had ballooned to 17 people!” adds Lord Mouse.
