Oumar Konate – Addoh (Clermont Music, 2014)
Oumar Konate‘s “Addoh” marked his first foray onto the international stage. Recorded amid the political turmoil in Mali between 2012-2013, the superb album served as a testament to the young Malians who experienced the chaos of rebellion and military coup that threatened their nation’s future. With recordings made both in Africa and the United States of America, Addoh featured remarkable contributions from a host of master musicians from both continents.
The seamless integration of traditional and contemporary instruments served as a testament to the artistry of the talented artists from Africa who, steeped in tradition yet connected by modern media, fused their sounds in innovative ways to express their hopes and ideas.
Throughout it all, Konate’s fazzling guitar playing stands out, supported by an impressive lineup of musicians, including Mahalmadane Traoré on drums, calabash, and conga; Dramane Toure on bass and rhythm guitar’ Professor Louie on keyboards, Hammond organ, grand piano, and accordion; Zoumane Tekereta on traditional violin; Adramane Idrissa Maiga on ngoni; Amadou Keita on jembe; Cheick Diallo on wooden flute; Sidiki Diabaté on kora; and The Debo Band horn section.
