Tribute to the Women of the Plains in the New Cimarrón Video

Acclaimed Colombian llanera music (plains music) band Cimarrón begins 2023 with an ode to empowerment in its new music video,’ Agüita fresca.’ The song is a choral story that shows the desires and pains of a group of women from the region in the foreground, from their own perspective and with the background of the forgotten towns of the Colombian-Venezuelan Orinoquía.

In its opening scene, the Agüita Fresca video recalls the work of the river washerwomen, this time located in the waters of Caño Camoa in San Martín de los Llanos. This is the oldest town in this region of Colombia, in the department of Meta.

Beyond the colonial architecture of the houses, the clay ovens and the old church, the video covers the inner world of the women who live in the town. “Never before has a joropo video shown women in the power of their loneliness: in desire, in their widowhood, in the fact of maternity. We wanted to do it in the town where we live, with people from here,” said Ana Veydó, singer and leader of Cimarrón.

It is in San Martín where Cimarrón has established their headquarters for musical rehearsals, in honor of the memory of Carlos “Cuco” Rojas, harpist and co-founder of the band who died in 2020, who was born in San Martín. He was co-author of the lyrics of Agüita Fresca along with the singer Ana Veydó.

‘Agüita fresca’ is a song featured in Cimarrón’s most recent album, “La Recia,” that reached #1 at the Transglobal World Music Chart.
