Oliver Nayoka – Club Series Chapter One (Palenque Records, 2022)
“Club Series Chapter One” introduces the music of skilled guitarist, vocalist and composer Oliver Nayoka, one of the rising stars of Nigerian Igbo Highlife music. The album is a co-production between Odogwu Entertainment (Nigeria) and Palenque Records (Colombia) to present some of the finest independent sounds from Africa.
The vinyl version of the album has only 2 tracks, each clocking over eighteen minutes. The digital version has an additional 14-minute song. These lengthy compositions highlight Oliver Nayoka’s engaging sound. Although deeply rooted in Igbo Highlife, Nayoka adds a seductive Congolese rumba guitar element. Over an irresistible rhythm section, Nayoka and his fellow guitarists play intricate guitar parts and, similar to griot praise singing, the lyrics celebrate the achievements of a group, community or a family in all works of life.
The lineup includes Oliver Nayoka on lead guitar and vocals; Unadike Dozie David on lead guitar; Somadina Eric Anusionwu on keyboards; Ibekwe Chimezie Chukwudimma on lead guitar; Egemba Elijah Chukwudalu on drums; Onuigbo Innocent Onyekachi on backing vocals; Obinna Mmaduabuchukwu Anisiobi on bass; and Chidiebere Valentine Nwabuneli on congas.
