Ellen Gibling – The Bend in the Light (Ellen Gibling, 2021)
The Bend in the Light is a solo harp album from Canadian composer, arranger, and harp player Ellen Gibling. Although Ellen Gibling has played various types of music in the past, this Celtic music album is dedicated to the folk traditions of Ireland, Scotland, Nova Scotia, and other parts of Canada.
The album features impeccable harp performances of uplifting traditional tunes (jigs, polkas, reels, waltzes, hornpipes, etc.) skillfully rearranged by Ellen Gibling as well as original pieces by Gibling and her colleagues.
Ellen Gibling is based in Halifax (also known as K’jipuktuk), Nova Scotia, Canada. She plays classical, Irish traditional and improvised music on lever and pedal harps.
Ellen studied classical music at McGill University, with additional training from the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. In recent times, she spent a year dedicated to Irish traditional music, studying at the University of Limerick in Ireland.
Throughout the last decade, Ellen has taken pleasure in working in a wide variety of settings, performing with pop artists, traditional bands, chamber groups, orchestras, film projects, dancers, and theater productions on Canada’s east coast.
In addition to her solo work, Ellen plays in Harpaflöjt, a trio specializing in Scandinavian traditional music and original compositions and arrangements. She is also a member of the traditional music ensembles Ragged Robin and Síle, free-improvised quartet New Hermitage, and the classical flute and harp duo Conundrum.
Ellen teaches at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts, and has also taught at Acadia University, the University of Limerick, and the Canadian International Summer Harp Institute.
