Artist Profiles: Son Rompe Pera

Innovative Mexican marimba band Son Rompe Pera was formed by the three Gama brothers, Kacho, Kilos and Mongo.

The brothers originally performed with their father at weddings and other events, and also in the street. Kacho, Kilos and Mongo initially played punk rock, rockabilly and ska in various bands.

Kacho, Kilos and Mongo collaborated and toured with with Chile’s influential musician Macha (Aldo Asenjo), who leads well known bands Chico Trujillo, La Floripondio and Bloque Depresivo. The experience in Chile led the three brothers to start experimenting with modern cumbia played on marimbas with an underground garage rocker attitude.

Band members in 2020 included Alan Gama (Mongo) on marimba and vocals; Jesús Ángel Gama (Kacho) on marimba and vocals; José Gama (Kilos) on percussion and vocals; Raúl Albarran on bass and vocals; and Ricardo López on drums.

In 2020, Son Rompe Pera released its debut album Batuco on Argentine label Aya Records (an imprint of ZZK Records).
