Encounters of Russian and Norwegian Music through Jazz

Evelina Petrova Trio – First Dance (Heilo, 2019)

First dance was the debut by the Evelina Petrova Trio. The project brought together three exciting musical traditions: Russian and Norwegian folk music and Nordic jazz.

The trio includes Evelina Petrova (Russia) on accordion, vocals; Laura Ellestad (Canada) on Hardanger fiddle, 5-string fiddle; and Andreas Rotevatn (Norway) on trombone and effect pedals.

First Dance was recorded in the one-room studio at the Department of Traditional Arts and Traditional Music in the mountain village of Rauland in southern Norway. The physical album features artwork by Russian artist Nikolay Sazhin.

In 2019, the trio was selected to perform showcase concerts on the main stage at Folkelarm, an international showcase festival for Nordic folk music.
