Artist Profiles: Selma Uamusse

Selma Uamusse is a Mozambican vocalist who has been living in Portugal since 1988. Her versatility as a singer enabled her to perform a wide range of musical genres as vocalist for various projects including rock band WrayGunn; afrobeat outfit Cacique’97; and gospel, soul and jazz with Gospel Collective.  

Later, Selma went back to her Mozambican roots and recorded her first solo album in 2018 titled “Mati” (water in the Changana language). The debut recording featured traditional Mozambican musical instruments such as mbiras and the timbilas (Mozambican balafon) along with modern musical instruments. Selma sings in two Mozambican languages, Changana and Chope.

In 2020, Selma released her second album, “Liwoningo” in which she continued her mix of Mozambican-rooted music and modern elements.
