Fado

The impassioned fado is Portugal’s best-known musical genre. For an in depth look at fado, read: The Passionate Story of Fado.

Madeiran Music

For a long time, Madeiran traditional music was a forgotten pearl. It existed only in the oral tradition and among the people, transmitted by students, people from the cities and musicians. Then, in the last two decades of the 20th century, some Madeiran musicians began researching the island’s music and capturing virtually unknown examples that demonstrate the richness of its traditional culture.

They found songs and poetry from the 12th century, now lost on the mainland, brought by Celtic peoples from northern Portugal and Spain; they listened to ancient forms of dance music and witnessed the last chapter of song merging between two powerful musical cultures: the Arabs and the Africans.
