World Music Expo 2019 Opened with Arctic Fire – Pohjoiset tulet Show

The World Music Expo, WOMEX, opened its 2019 edition at the Tampere Hall in Finland on October 23, 2019. The opening show, titled  Arctic Fire – Pohjoiset tulet , was produced by Music Finland and directed by internationally-renowned choreographer and dancer Kaari Martin, along with composer, musician and producer Roni Martin. The concert featured four laudable performances from Pauanne, Pekko Käppi, Suistamon Sähkö, and Vildá, all representing this year’s host country, Finland.

On hosting WOMEX in Tampere this year, Minister of Science and Culture of Finland, Hanna Kosonen, stated: “Finland can be considered as an example of the power of music; to help to construct and articulate national identities in the language of music, but also offer the most peaceful and natural way to fuse cultures together and express multi-culturalism…World music brings audible values such as equality, multi-culturalism, cultural diversity and easy access to culture. These values go extremely well hand in hand with the main goals and values of our Ministry.”

Deputy Mayor of the City of Tampere, Johanna Loukaskorpi, expressed: “The value of music can be a personal emotion or on the other hand, its value can be the huge economic impact the music industry has. Cities and nations all over the world need you, the music professionals, to keep them going. Equality and diversity are things which have to be essential values in every decision and action we make…this is something to be celebrated.”

The evening reception was hosted by Music Finland where a special toast was raised to the all WOMEX delegates who have attended every edition of WOMEX’s 25 years of life.

offWOMEX 2019 Lineup Announced

The World Music Expo (WOMEX) revealed today the artists set to perform as part of the offWOMEX 2019 programing.

offWOMEX provides an additional integrated platform for bands and artists to present themselves and their music to the world music professionals attending WOMEX from around the globe. WOMEX will take place October 23-27, 2019 in Tampere, Finland.

This year’s offWOMEX stage includes a wide range of artists from Spain, Latvia, Canada, Hungary, Cuba and Russia, and are presented and funded by ICEX/Sounds from Spain, Sierra, Basque Music, Eesti Kultuurkapital, Mundial Montréal, Folquébec, Musicaction, FACTOR, Canada Council for the Arts, SODEC, National Cultural Fund of Hungary and the Halmos Bela Program.

WOMEX Announces First Set of 2019 World Music Showcases

The World Music Expo (WOMEX) has unveiled the first set of official jury-selected showcase artists scheduled to perform in Tampere, Finland, October 23 – 27, 2019.

The 2019 selection thus far represents a wide-range of world music genres and styles: new tango, urban-edged Senegambian sabar drums, polyphonic vocal tradition of Georgia; the fiddles of Finland,  Brazil’s ‘Queen of Carimbó’; an Iranian orchestra,  Sindhi sarangi fiddle from Rajasthan deser, Korean pansori singing , reggae, sacred steel guitar gospel blues and more.

Leading World Music conference WOMEX 2019 Call for Proposals Now Open

WOMEX, the World Music Expo is welcoming showcase, film and conference proposals from artists, bands, DJs and producers, filmmakers, industry experts and creative thinkers. WOMEX 2019 will take place in Tampere, Finland, October 23 – 27, 2019.

The pool of proposals will be selected by an independent, international and annually changing jury, also known as the Seven Samurai.

Proposals can be made in four categories: Showcase, Club Summit, Film and Conference and can be submitted from the dedicated website: www.womex-apply.com

The deadline for proposals for WOMEX 2019 is Friday, March 22, 2019.
