Oud Maestro Sufian Ararah Revisits Memory on “Asdaa”

Berlin-based Libyan oud player and composer Sufian Ararah has introduced “Asdaa” (أصداء), a new piece for oud and piano created with Andreas F. Staffel. The composition focuses on memory, place, and the echoes of spaces that no longer exist. Moreover, “Asdaa” is influenced by Mediterranean and North African musical traditions, placing them in a contemporary setting.

Ararah, who is from Tripoli and now lives in Germany, works as a performer and composer. His music brings together Middle Eastern maqamat, North African rhythms, and Mediterranean melodies.

Meanwhile, he is developing his debut album, Wijdan. The project explores Middle Eastern jazz and world music traditions through a contemporary lens. In turn, it also revisits Libyan heritage and places it in dialogue with wider musical forms.

Musicians: Oud – Sufian Ararah on oud; and Andreas F. Staffel on piano.
