Jolifanto, From Deep Flamenco to Electronica and Beyond

ZA! + Perrate – Jolifanto (Lovemonk, 2024)

Jolifanto is a collaborative, experimental debut album by ZA! and Perrate, two distinct musical forces from opposite corners of Spain, both geographically and artistically. While ZA! brings electronica and other contemporary influences into the mix, Perrate adds deeply rooted flamenco.

Perrate, grew up in a celebrated Gitano (Spanish Gypsy) lineage. Meanwhile, ZA! is an groundbreaking duo that fuses wild jazz, post-rock, and avant-garde electronics. They share a fervent desire to push boundaries and explore rhythmic landscapes, where the conventional notion of ‘place’ is rendered irrelevant amidst their musical experimentation.

Taking its name from the opening verse of Hugo Ball’s seminal Dadaist poem “Karawane,” Jolifanto embodies the spirit of improvisation intertwined with meticulous planning, propelled by polyrhythms that traverse diverse musical territories.

“Pregones,” the album’s first single, unleashes Perrate’s commanding vocals, dub rhythms and a fusion of trumpets before transitioning into harsh industrial sounds and uncharted sonic realms.

The serendipitous meeting between Perrate and ZA! epitomizes the convergence of musical experimentation and sound radicalism, sparked by a chance encounter at a festival where Perrate was captivated by ZA!’s boundary-pushing performance. Their collaboration flourished through rapid idea exchanges and mutual creative resonance, culminating in a dynamic partnership captured during a recording session at Happy Place studio in Seville.
