Artist Profiles: Manuel Maio

Portuguese multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and composer Manuel Maio performs music grounded in Portuguese traditions as well as chamber and world music. After graduating as a violinist at ESMAE College in Oporto, Portugal, Manuel Maio studied at the prestigious jazz school Centre des Musiques Didier Lockwood in France.

Manuel Maio released two albums with the group A Presença das Formigas, collaborated with acclaimed Portuguese artists such as Amélia Muge, João Afonso and Spanish singer-songwriter Luis Pastor.

Maio participated in several national and international projects and wrote music for theater and film. He also produced albums for various artists.

Eventually, Maio felt the need to express his musical voice through a solo album. He put together the 2022 album “Sem olhar ao Tempo”, with music and lyrics by Maio.
