Artist Profiles: Flamenco pianist Andrés Barrios

Flamenco pianist Andrés Barrios Navarro was born in Utrera (Seville). Since he was a child he was attracted to flamenco.

A classically trained artist, Andrés Barrios incorporated jazz, Latin and Afro-Cuban music to his piano style, influenced by Chick Corea, Chucho Valdés, Michel Camilo and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, among others.

He finished his Higher Degree piano studies at the Bonifacio Gil Conservatory in Badajoz, under the guidance of prestigious pianist Ángel Sanzo. He later obtained the Professional Degree at the Francisco Guerrero Conservatory, Seville, where he received the Honorary End-of-Degree Piano Award.

At 22, he had already performed on major stages such as: Maestranza Theater in Seville, Sala Turina, Essaouira World Music Festival (Morocco), Enrique de la Cuadra Theater, Alcázar Nights, Flamenco Beat Cycle, Festival Mirajazz, Badajoz Theater, Madrid International Clazzjazz Festival, Badajoz Flamenco and Fado Festival, Vitoria Jazz Festival and Las Minas Cante Festival where he won the Filón award for “Best Instrumentalist 2018.”

On November 22, 2019, he released his second studio album: Al Sur del Jazz. It included eleven songs composed by Andrés and features acclaimed artists such as Arcángel, Rocío Márquez, and Sandra Carrasco.

In 2020, he presented Universo Lorca at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, a renewed and particular vision of the traditional songs that Federico García Lorca rescued. Next, in 2021, together with Juan Pérez Floristán (winner of the 2021 Rubinstein piano award), he premiered a two-piano show at the Segura Music Festival with his own arrangements and compositions and by great composers of the 20th century, to which both pianists brought their own perspective.
