Beguiling Mix of Modern Bluegrass and Orchestra

Steep Canyon Rangers and Asheville Symphony – Be Still Moses (Yep Roc Records, 2020)

Asheville-based Steep Canyon Rangers, one of the leading contemporary bluegrass bands in the United States joined forces with the Asheville Symphony to record a splendid album where the traditional music of western North Carolina is masterfully combined with classical music and folk-rock.

Be Still Moses includes an additional special collaboration with celebrated Philadelphia soul group Boyz II Men, who add their superb vocal harmonies and lead vocals intertwined with bluegrass-style vocal stylings

The album represents the rich musical scene in Asheville, the scenic mountain town in western North Carolina that has become a favorite residence for musicians, potters and many other artists.

The orchestral arrangements were wonderfully-crafted by Jonathan Sacks, a composer and arranger who has worked on many well-known movies including The Princess and the Frog (2009), Disney’s “Cars” (2006), and both X-Files motion pictures.

The steep Canyon Rangers includes Michael Ashworth on vocals, percussion, guitar and mandolin; Michael Guggino on vocals, mandolin and mandola; Woody Platt on vocals and guitar; Nicky Sanders on fiddle, piano and vocals; Graham Sharp on vocals, banjo, guitar and harmonica; and Barrett Smith on bass.
