Tribute to a Reggae Legend (Putumayo PUT 303-2, 2010)
Putumayo has released Tribute to a Reggae Legend as a tribute to Bob Marley, the reggae legend that would have been 65 in 2010. Tribute to a Reggae Legend includes some of Marley’s most famous songs performed by musicians from various parts of the world. Five of those pieces are exclusive, original tracks recorded for this project.
The best cuts in the album are the Afropop and soul-laced ‘Could You Be Loved’ by Caracol (Canada), the silky Brazilian version of ‘Concrete Jungle’ by Céu (Brazil), ‘Sun Is Shining’ which shows African reggae at its best by Rocky Dawuni (Ghana), Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars make a persuasive version of ‘No Woman No Cry’, ‘One Love’ is reconfigured into a bluesy piece by the street musicians of Playing for Change (USA) and Hawaii’s Three Plus recreate ‘Is This Love’ into a laid back song.
Other artists featured include Robi Kahakalau (Hawaii), Rebelution (USA), Freshlyground (South Africa), Northern Lights feat. Jonathan Edwards (USA), Julie Crochetière (Canada) and Funkadesi (USA/India).
Tribute to a Reggae Legend is a fascinating global journey that celebrates the best songs of Bob Marley.
