Brilliant Rocky Mountain Mandolin

Matt Flinner – Music du Jour (Compass Records, 2009)

Matt Flinner is one of the most reputable mandolinists in the United States. His latest recording is Music du Jour (2009), which he and his bandmates composed while on tour with his dazzling trio, which includes Flinner on mandolin, Ross Martin on guitar and Eric Thorin on bass. The album is the result of a challenge the three musicians made to one another while touring the Rocky Mountain area. The idea was to write a new tune each day while on tour and perform it that evening. The first concert was at a small art gallery in Salt Lake City and the show was a success. The rest of the pieces were recorded and played at venues throughout Colorado, and Utah, Wyoming and Idaho.

The three maestros came up with an exciting collection of instrumental acoustic pieces that blend contemporary bluegrass, jazz improvisation, Scott-Irish Celtic music elements and contemporary acoustic music. “We did three Music du Jour  tours before making this recordings,” says Matt Flinner. “All three tours were in the Mountain West. We came up with over 60 new tunes, and I believe we grew a great deal as writers, musicians, friends and, perhaps, human beings. We’ve selected some of our favorites for this CD.” The album was recorded in Nashville (Tennessee).

Music du Jour is an extraordinary album by one of the hottest mandolinists in the North American acoustic music scene.
