Voices of Southern Africa, Vol. 2 – Insingizi (Arc Music EUCD2243, 2009)

Imbizi, one of the finest a cappella groups from Africa, has a new recording titled Voices of Southern Africa, Vol. 2. This follows the unexpected worldwide success of their first album, Voices of Southern Africa. On Voices of Southern Africa, Vol. 2, the Zimbabwean vocal group presents fourteen new songs, some of which are a cappella or accompanied with African drums, clapping, and whistles.

The group is formed by three talented musicians based in the Bulawayo area of Zimbabwe: Vusa Mkhaya Ndlovu, Dumisani ‘Ramadu’ Moyo and Blessings ‘Nqo’ Nkomo. Their fascinating musical style includes elements of Zimbabwean folk and South African mbube (popularized by the South African group Ladysmith Black Mambazo).

After the success of the first album we were faced with a challenge to produce a CD that would have an even greater impact” says group leader Vusa Mkhaya Ndlovu. “The songs on the new CD are a mixture of our own compositions as well as traditional songs that changed our music sense, such as ‘Londolozela’ and the hard-hitting war song, ‘Lamlela ndwandwe’. The other compositions were inspired by life in the townships and they reflect the day to day life in modern day Zimbabwe.”

On Voices of Southern Africa, Vol. 2, Insingizi mesmerize the listeners with their admirable vocal qualities.
