Berlin’s Open-Air Summer Festival Wassermusik 2014 will celebrate Lusofonia, the music and culture of the Portuguese-speaking counters with a series of concerts and films July 25-August 16, 2014 at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW).

Wassermusik 2014 will try to determine if Brazil is still the leading musical force or if Angola and Mozambique have caught up. Other questions include ‘What has become of the musical boom set off by Césaria Évora in the Cape Verde Islands?’ And ‘how has Portugal itself navigated the changing times?’.

These questions will be answered by legends such as the Portuguese singer/songwriter Fausto Bordalo Dias and Conjunto Angola 70, who will resurrect the revolutionary Angola of the 1970s. Also included are new acts like the former underdog and current dance-floor star Cabo Snoop from Angola, and the songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and guitarist Fachada from Portugal; and world stars like the Brazilian Lenine, who teamed up with the Dutch Martin Fondse Orchestra to build “The Bridge,” an electrifying, transatlantic orchestral song cycle.

The concert series will be opened by the Cape Verdean Mayra Andrade, whose impressive voice melodiously unites songs of the political resistance, African fado and Brazilian pop.

The 17 concerts will further highlight: Bonga, Maria de Medeiros, Daniel Nogueira & Projeto Coisa Fina, Norberto Lobo, Nhambavale, África Negra, Homeboyz, DJ Nigga Fox, Kimi Djabaté, Neco Novellas and Ava Rocha.

Like the concerts, the feature films, music films and documentaries will follow the various branches of the lusophone world, the cross-connections, old injuries and new hopes.

Concerts and films: Fri, Jul 25 – Sat, Aug 16, every Fri and Sat,
Open-air on the Haus der Kulturen der Welt: HKW Roof Terrace (in the Exhibition Hall in case of rain)
Film workshop: “Making of Wassermusik,” Jul 24-27
