Nyron Higor’s Stunning Self-Titled Album at the Intersection of Brazilian Tradition and Innovation

Nyron Higor – Nyron Higor (Far Out Recordings, 2025)

Nyron Higor is a highly talented Afro-Brazilian multi-instrumentalist from Maceió, Brazil. His new self-titled album, Nyron Higor, draws deeply from Northeastern Brazilian music and golden-era MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). He mixes these deeply grounded Brazilian roots with global influences and contemporary production to craft a mesmerizing, exquisite, and laid back exploration of resilience and triumph.

Following the understated brilliance of his debut, Fio de Lâmina, an instrumental gem, Higor’s elegant second album signals a bold shift towards lyrical expression. “This album is a test of resistance,” Higor explains, “and a significant moment in my life as a young Black man from the Northeast. Its context is political.”

To bring this ambitious vision to life, Higor relocated to São Paulo, collaborating with luminaries from Brazil’s contemporary music scene, including Bruno Berle, Batata Boy, Alici Sol, and Natalia Grilo. The result is a lush, engaging and joyful set that highlights the transformative power of collaboration.

Album opener Ciranda sets a cinematic tone with its slow frevo rhythm, melancholic acoustic guitar, and trombone melodies, creating an atmosphere both intimate and expansive. Meanwhile, the lead single, São Só Palavras, featuring Alici Sol and Bruno Berle, captures the fleeting intensity of young love in a brilliant minute-and-a-half burst of emotion.

Higor’s gift for creating layered, evocative soundscapes shines in tracks like Louro Cantador, where playful organ tones, charming birdlike whistles, and elegant acoustic guitar engage with the gentle pulse of Higor’s bass, his signature instrument. Throughout the album’s ten finely crafted tracks, moments of raw intimacy, jubilant energy and brilliant bass performances are framed by Higor’s mastery of sound and silence.

Above all, I value making music that brings me genuine satisfaction,” Higor reflects. “I’m always seeking depth in the things I create.”

As Higor expressed, “This work is liberating, contemplative, and victorious.”
