Amada’s Stylish Multilingual Debut ‘Nove Piccoli Sorsi di Mare’

Amada – Nove Piccoli Sorsi di Mare (Soundfly, 2023)

Italian singer-songwriter Amada presents Nove Piccoli Sorsi di Mare (Nine Small Sips of the Sea), her debut album. Remarkably, this world music project evolved organically, with each song emerging courageously, “in small sips, one after the other.” It is sung in six languages, Portuguese, Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, Italian, French, and Sicilian from Catania.

Gifted with lovely and soulful vocals, Amada stylishly infuses her music with an enthralling mix of traditional sounds from Italy, Cape Verde, Argentina, and the Mediterranean intertwined with delightful chamber music and modern musical influences.

The album was produced by talented bassist and composer, Giacomo Pedicini, a former collaborator of Joe Barbieri and Nino Buonocore, and a member of the Spaccanapoli group. Giacomo Pedicini not only produced the album but also co-authored the songs.

Nove Piccoli Sorsi di Mare is woven together by a common thread, seamlessly integrating various languages with diverse music, embracing both traditional sounds and modern instruments. It serves as a vessel for a wounded language that narrates tales of emotions, conflicts, and the contrasts among ancient cultures within old cities, forgotten ports, and new landscapes. Amada, born Annalisa Madonna, from Naples, has consistently demonstrated a deep affection for the diverse languages of the world throughout her extensive career as a performer.

Amada’s career as a vocalist can be traced back to Kantango, where she lent her voice to the rendition of “Dejame,” a composition by Pedicini and Joe Barbieri featured in the 2010 album “Ida y Vuelta.” This album highlighted Amada’s voice alongside vocalists Lura and Susana Baca, and Richard Galliano on the accordion.

Throughout the years, Amada has shared the stage with the Israeli singer Noa on multiple occasions. As a Sony artist in 2003 with the ensemble Permiso Extraordinario, she ventured into the world of theater in 2005 with the Stone Dancerinc company in London. Additionally, in 2013, she marked her debut on Broadway as an author and singer with the show “T’Ammore.”

Musicians: Amada on vocals, shaker, handclaps; Giacomo Pedicini on electric bass, electric guitar, Rhodes, double bass, acoustic guitar, cello, percussion; Valerio Middione on acoustic guitar, classical guitar; Francesco Manna on zabumba, shaker, cajon, percussion, riqq and darbuka; Stefano Jorio on cello; Francesco Di Cristofaro on accordion; Salvio Vassallo on drums; and Massimiliano Sacchi on bass clarinet.
