Tião Carvalho: A Multifaceted Artist and disseminator of Brazilian Culture Through Music and Dance

Tião Carvalho, from Maranhão based in São Paulo is a singer, composer, musician, dancer, capoeirista, comedian, and educator. Notably, he has been working for over 40 years, spreading traditional Brazilian culture in Brazil and the world, in musical presentations and workshops that he teaches.

Founder and director of the Cupuaçu Group and with two solo albums released, he is one of the pioneers in the insertion of forró in São Paulo, with the work of the bands Mafuá and Mexe com Tudo, in the 1980s. Tião Carvalho has great knowledge about dances, songs, popular games and traditional festivities.

The repertoire includes sambas, forrós, bumba meu boi and other manifestations of Maranhão culture and Brazilian popular culture.

Tião Carvalho was invited to participate in the Malungo Festival 2023, a mesmerizing convergence of in-person and video displays, dedicated to the vibrant mosaic of Brazilian Black Culture.
