Entavía: the Future of Salamancan Folk Music While Respecting Tradition

Entavía – Raíces con alas (self-release, 2017)

Entavía, a world music band from Salamanca, Spain, was formed by a group of passionate Spanish musicians representing various traditions. In 2017, Entavía released their finely crafted debut album, Raíces con Alas (roots with wings).

Although Entavía’s music is deeply steeped in the traditions of the Salamanca area, Entavía also skillfully draws from other sources in Spain. Salamanca’s heritage is significantly rooted in the footsteps of travelers who traversed the historic Vía de la Plata (the Silver Route), a path connecting Seville in the south to Santiago in the north. This ancient road was used by pilgrims, traders, and also transported a confluence of ideas.

Important to note that Salamanca’s vibrant culture includes distinctive dance styles, such as the charro, charrada, and the ubiquitous jota, a lively dance that transcends boundaries and resonates throughout Spain. Entavía incorporate these lively dances as well as melodies from various villages. Moreover, they pay homage to the tradition of the “copla,” a traditional formed of music that flourished in the 1930s. The band’s creative journey also draws from the visionary poetry of influential writers like Miguel de Unamuno.

One of the beautiful facets of music is its ability to accompany travelers without any expectations in return. Spanish melodies made their transatlantic journey to America, sowing seeds that continue to inspire musicians on both sides of the Atlantic. In this spirit, Entavía extends their heartfelt tribute to the musical legacy of their American counterparts.

The band said: “Raíces con alas is our first work of contemporary folklore. We know the musical past of our society, and we create oral tradition in the present beyond making historicist folk. Nurturing ourselves from different influences, such as flamenco, classical airs, jazz, and others timbres of exotic latitudes to form roots music subject to the past and wings to fly to the future…”

Musicians: Cele Hernández on vocals; Javier Montes on flutes, gaita charra, percussion; David Jiménez “Tevi” on Spanish guitar; Emilio Cordero “Michu” on clarinet, cuatro, taisho koto; and Óscar López on electric bass and double bass.

Entavía unveiled their second recording, “Arando Ñieve” (Plowing Snow), during the fall of 2021.
