Saîdê Goyî’s ‘Jinê’ Fuses Timeless Poetry and Mesmerizing Melodies

Saîdê Goyî – Jinê (Saîdê Goyî, 2023)

“Jinê” is a captivating journey into the sonic world of Saîdê Goyî and his latest masterful work, “Jinê.” Hailing from the Uludere district of Şırnak Province (Turkey), also known as Roboskî to the locals, Saîdê Goyî is an extraordinary dengbêj.

According to Clémence Scalbert-Yüce, the term “dengbêj” originates from the Kurdish language and is a fusion of “deng” (meaning “voice”) and “bêj” (which translates to “to tell”). In 1977, Roger Lescot eloquently described dengbêj as “professional poets” who, after years of diligent apprenticeship under seasoned masters, took upon themselves the sacred duty of preserving ancient traditions. Not only did they preserve the treasures of the past, but they also exalted the heroic deeds of the present through their poetic prowess. These bards, with their boundless repertoire and unparalleled improvisational skills, bequeathed to us poems spanning countless centuries.

Encouraged by his son, Saîdê Goyî released his debut album, “Stranên Dilê Min” (Song of my Heart), in 2022. This musical offering garnered immense recognition, particularly in Turkey. The newly released second album,”Jinê,” gracefully encapsulates the essence of both womanhood and life in the Kurdish language.

This profound work reverberates with Saîdê Goyî’s deep-rooted admiration and love for the women who have left an indelible mark on his existence. In both of these seminal albums, Saîdê Goyî weaves a musical tapestry enriched with the authentic flavors of his cultural heritage. Within the embrace of his resonant voice, one encounters the resplendent melodies and poignant narratives of the dengbêj tradition, harmoniously entwined with moments of mellifluous serenades. Simplicity reigns supreme, as the artist effortlessly navigates the terrain of his native tongue, infusing every lyric with heartfelt sincerity.

Saîdê Goyî found his muse in the brilliant Ali Doğan Gönültaş, who directed and arranged both albums with exceptional finesse.

Musicians: Saîdê Goyî on lead vocals; Ali Doğan Gönültaş on tembur and backing vocals; Selami Gördeli on ney, zurna; Cengiz Yılmaz on cello; Can Yazçiçeği on traditional drum; and Ali Tekbaş, and Bewar Tekbaş on backing vocals.
