Paolo Angeli – Níjar (AnMa ReR Megacorp, 2023)
Paolo Angeli’s album “Níjar” is a splendid, cinematic and ethereal imaginary soundtrack for Federico García Lorca’s play “Bodas de Sangre.” It was recorded during the same studio session as his previous album and completed in February 2023.
The spellbinding album follows the three-act structure of the play and incorporates sung parts with excerpts from Lorca’s text. Angeli uses the Spanish language to recite Lorca’s verses, deviating from his usual Sardinian languages.
“Níjar” is heavily influenced by contemporary flamenco and pays homage to the genre. It weaves together various musical styles and creates a dense and complex language. The album reinterprets Lorca’s tragedy while incorporating elements of modernity and societal issues. Angeli’s instrumentation includes the orchestral guitar, vocals, electronics, and flamenco guitar.
