Mesmerizing European Folk Recreations with Bowed Strings and Wind Instruments

Griselda Sanderson & Ricardo de Noronha – Veer (Waulk Records, 2017)

Veer is a multicolored collaboration between British musician Griselda Sanderson and Portuguese instrument maker and player Ricardo de Noronha.

Although the fascinating music on Veer is grounded in European folk traditions, Sanderson and de Noronha perform new sound explorations featuring spontaneous improvisations. Sanderson plays nyckelharpa, hardanger fiddle, riti (West African one-stringed fiddle), violin and double bass. Meanwhile, de Noronha plays wind instruments he made, such as his versions of Slovakian fujara shepherd’s flutes.

Guest musicians include Soufian Saihi on ud; Nuno Silva on dulcimer; and Louis Bingham on cittern, tambura, bass and accordion.
