Siti & the Band is an ensemble based in Zanzibar (Tanzania) that was formed in February 2016. The band combines traditional sounds and modern music from the melting pot of Zanzibar, where ancient Arab, Persian, Indian and African musical traditions meet. Influences include taarab from the 1980s, Kidumbaki, Kyaso rhythms from Pemba Island, Afro Jazz, funk, reggae, and more. They use Arabic instruments such as the ud and qanun.
“We grew together musically while studying traditional Taarab at the Dhow Countries Music Academy in Zanzibar,” says the band.
Siti & The Band are inspired by Siti Binti Saad, known as the Mother of Taarab. She was the first female musician from Zanzibar to release recordings and tour worldwide. “While keeping her cultural heritage alive, we are stating an example for the new generation of East Africans, many of whom are denying their roots, and therefore a crucial element building identity and uniqueness while finding their musical voices.”
The band’s first album “Fusing the Roots” showcased the timeless nature of Zanzibar’s traditional and contemporary music. The empowering lyrics provide a strong feminist statement towards the self-determination of African women.
Band members in 2021 included Siti Amina on lead vocals and ud; Gora Gora on qanun; Vee Diva on violin; Jimmy The Drummer on drums; Razakey on keyboards; and Sam Groove on bass.
In 2021, Siti & the Band released a series of singles in anticipation of their second second album.
