Vedan Kolod – Gorodische (CPL-Music, 2021)
The album Gorodische from Vedan Kolod introduces rarely heard traditional folk songs from different parts of Russia to a wider audience. Originally released in 2014, the fascinating album now has international distribution.
Gorodische includes ancient songs, centuries old that have been rearranged by the band. “It is our one album of genuine folk”, says singer and percussionist Tatiana Naryshinka. The other band members are percussionist and vocalist Daryana Antipova and singer and multi-instrumentalist Valery Naryshkin.
Vedan Kolod’s sound is characterized by harmony vocals, flutes and whistles, drums, lutes, mouth harps and hurdy gurdy. The band was originally founded in Krasnoyarsk, Siberia’s third largest city, but has spent many years in Moscow. Vedan Kolod sing in Old Russian, or Old East Slavic, about myths and legends from their homeland.
