Freeform Jazz Rooted in the Sounds of Eastern Cuba

Aruán Ortiz – Inside Rhythmic Falls (Intakt, 2020)

Cuban pianist Aruán Ortiz deconstructs and reworks the various musical influences in Cuban music, primarily changüí and tumba francesa, on Inside Rhythmic Falls. It is an experimental, rhythmic album featuring piano, percussion and vocals. It’s a difficult listen as it is freeform improvisation.

The lineup includes Aruán Ortiz on piano and vocals; Andrew cyrille on drums; and percussionist Mauricio Herrera on marimbula, bongos, catá, cowbells and vocals.
