Vikku Vinayakram, V. Selvaganesh, Umashankar and Swaminathan Selvaganesh

Three generations of celebrated musicians will celebrate South Indian percussion on Saturday, March 21, 2020 at Roulette in Downtown Brooklyn, New York.

The ensemble is led by renowned percussionist Vikku Vinayakram, who has popularized the ghatam (clay pot) throughout his long career. He was a founding member of the much-admired Shakti ensemble with John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain, and received India’s most significant awards and titles.

Vikku Vinayakram will be joined by his two sons, V. Selvaganesh (hybrid drum kit), a prominent percussionist who was a member of Remember Shakti, and Umashankar (ghatam), who is known for his impressive rise in the classical Carnatic music field; his grandson, the vigorous Swaminathan Selvaganesh (kanjira, konakkol), who has become one of the finest kanjira players of his generation; and A. Ganesan (morsing), who has played in ensembles with Zakir Hussain and toured with Vikku all over the world.
