Artist Profiles: Orquesta Sublime

Orquesta Sublime

Orquesta Sublime is one of the great groups from the age of the cha cha chá. Founded by flute player Melquiades Fundora in 1956, it became one of the big popular dance bands in Cuba. Like Orquesta Aragon and other popular groups of the time, Sublime is a charanga orchestra, its traditional sound characterized by a rhythm section of timbales guiro and congas with bass and piano, a string section, singers and the flute as the instrumental solo voice. It’s a Cuban mix of Spanish and African colors.

In recent years La Sublime was under the direction of violinist Gerardo Chapelli featuring a younger generation of musicians.
