Sona Jobarteh, the first female Kora virtuoso to come from a West African Griot family, is set to perform on June 18 at Africa Oyé 2016 music festival. Africa Oyé will take place on June 18-19 in Liverpool’s Sefton Park, from 12:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. both days. Admission is free for all.
Breaking away from tradition, Sona Jobarteh is a modern day pioneer in an ancient, male-dominated hereditary tradition that has been exclusively handed down from father to son for the past seven centuries. The Gambian artist has modernized the presentation of Kora music bringing a rhythmic edge to her compositions that fits her extraordinary voice. She recorded an album titled Fasiya.
